South Tapanuli, North Sumatra (ANTARA) — PT Dahana has successfully achieved the breakthrough of all tunnels involved in the underground excavation work for the Batang Toru Hydropower Plant (PLTA) construction project. The final blast was executed on January 25, 2024, in Sipirok, South Tapanuli, North Sumatra.
Setio Budhianto, General Manager of PT Dahana’s Quarry & Construction Division, stated that the successful completion of the underground blasting work at the Batang Toru project has boosted Dahana’s confidence for future undertakings.
“On January 25, 2024, DAHANA successfully carried out the final blast for the excavation of all tunnels at the Batang Toru Hydropower Plant. We extend our gratitude to the Board of Directors for their support, as well as to the DAHANA personnel who remained enthusiastic in completing their tasks at Batang Toru,” said Setio Budhianto.
The Batang Toru Hydropower Plant is a power generation project currently under construction on the Batang Toru River in South Tapanuli Regency, North Sumatra Province, Indonesia. The plant is scheduled to commence operations in 2026 and is designed with a capacity of 4 x 127.5 MW.
At the Batang Toru site, Dahana was tasked with accelerating the excavation of tunnels measuring 8 meters in width and 8 meters in height, spanning a total length of 13,500 meters—work that has been ongoing since 2017. To construct the tunnels, Dahana utilized Dayagel Extra technology, along with non-electric and electric detonators.
Furthermore, the continuous nature of the work at the Batang Toru site required special attention from Dahana; to maintain operational stamina and blasting quality, Setio instructed the site coordinator to effectively manage a workforce totaling 84 people. Additionally, the field team strictly adhered to Occupational Health and Safety (K3) principles to achieve a “Zero Accident” record during the construction of the Batang Toru Hydropower Plant. “DAHANA’s participation in the construction of the Batang Toru Hydropower Plant (PLTA) represents a form of corporate support for environmental commitments; the project adheres to strict environmental standards throughout its planning, construction, and operational phases,” concluded Setio.
The Batang Toru Hydropower Plant project is considered environmentally friendly, as it aims to help mitigate global warming by reducing reliance on carbon-emitting energy sources; consequently, the project complies with rigorous environmental standards across all stages—from planning and construction to operation.
The “Breakthrough All Tunnel” event was attended by consultants, the project owner, and contractors, including PT Huadong, PT NSHE, and PT Sinohydro. Overall, DAHANA’s clients commended the performance of the company’s team and the quality of its explosives in completing the tunneling work for the Batang Toru Hydropower Plant.
