Capacity and Technology

The Batangtoru Hydropower Plant (PLTA Batangtoru) is one of the new renewable energy projects developed to support the reliability of the electricity system on Sumatra Island. By utilizing the flow of the Batang Toru River as its main energy source, the Batangtoru Hydropower Plant contributes to providing a reliable electricity supply while supporting the energy transition in Indonesia.

The construction of the Batangtoru Hydropower Plant is carried out through various stages, taking into account technical aspects, occupational safety, environmental management, and social responsibility as part of applying sustainable development principles.

The Batangtoru Hydropower Plant has an installed capacity of 510 MW and applies a run-of-river system equipped with daily pondage (a daily storage pond). Unlike conventional hydropower plants that use large-capacity reservoirs, this system utilizes the natural flow of the Batang Toru River as its main energy source. The daily pondage regulates water availability within the daily operational cycle so that the plant can operate efficiently while maintaining the natural characteristics of the river.

Dam Technical Specifications

The Batangtoru Hydropower Plant dam uses a Concrete Gravity Dam type with a height of 74 meters, a base width of 42 meters, a crest width of 140.5 meters, and a dam crest elevation at EL. +436.00 masl.

In its operation, the dam has several important elevations, namely the Flood Water Level (FWL) at EL. +434.50 masl, the High Water Level (HWL) at EL. +432.50 masl, and the Low Water Level (LWL) at EL. +427.50 masl.

At the high water operating level (HWL), the dam has a storage capacity of 17.88 million m³, with an effective storage volume for daily operation reaching 4.54 million m³. This capacity is designed to support peak-load operation of up to around 6 hours per day, with an additional safety factor of 15%.

As part of design optimization, the dam height was also raised by 2.5 meters from the initial EPC contract design. This adjustment was made to maintain the net head, preserve the effective volume against sedimentation, and support reliable energy production in line with electricity system needs and the power purchase agreement with PT PLN.
